Trauma Counselling for Victims of Crime

We offer free mental health counselling covered by the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) for those who have witnessed or have been harmed by crime.

Our services are unique as we have a holistic approach. We provide trauma informed counselling with chair yoga, focusing on the mind-body connection which improves the recovery rate from trauma.

Why counselling and chair yoga?

Research indicates that the nervous system holds onto traumatic memories—sometimes for years after the lived event has ended. Professional counselling is beneficial, but the body retains the memory of the trauma, causing the survivor to be in a physically distressed and alarmed state.

Mind-body therapy, such as yoga, helps to release stored stressful memories from the body.

Doing counselling and yoga together you will be able to:

  • Make choices for your life instead of feeling stuck in a trauma state.
  • Feel physically safe and reconnect with your body
  • Feel grounded and present
  • Reduce the symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety and depression
  • Rediscover how to self-regulate
  • Learn skills to process your emotions using yoga

Distress is normal after experiencing the trauma of being a victim to crime.

Everyone has their own unique path to recovery.

The most important thing to remember is that you will recover. You have been a victim of a criminal act, but you are not a victim.

You are a whole person who is here, reading this site, because you need some help on the path to recovery.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You are unhappy most of the time.
  • You feel like crying and you don’t know why.
  • You are super alert, watchful or on guard.
  • You are having trouble remembering the crime.
  • You are tense and on edge.
  • You have trouble falling or staying asleep.
  • You are telling yourself to get over it and move forward.
  • You want to forget but the images of the event keep coming back.
  • You have nightmares, dreams and thoughts you cannot stop.
  • You are feeling cut off from family or friends.
  • You wonder if you have depression.
  • You are hard on yourself.
  • You have lost enthusiasm for your interests.
  • You avoid thinking or talking about the incident.
  • You have physical reactions (heart pounding, trouble breathing, sweating) when something reminds you of the crime.

If you are experiencing any of the points from above after witnessing or being harmed by a criminal act, it is likely due the trauma.  It is important to take action now to prevent these trauma symptoms from becoming chronic long-term struggles.
